Accommodation Background Information Oxenwood Outdoor Education Centre was opened in 1969 on the site of the former village school and school house. A pratten building was built for extra accommodation and a classroom. In 1996 the Centre underwent a number of building improvements to raise the standard of the facilities it could provide. Year on year the Centre is continually modernised and updated. Accommodation Oxenwood can accommodate a maximum of thirty-eight students and eight adults. In the south end of the building is a common/dining/recreation room. Adjoining this are the staff room, boot room and Head of Centre's Office / Trading Post. Along the corridor is the kitchen, which has a complete range of cooking utensils, a large catering size cooker, fridge and freezer, dishwasher (automatic soap feed), microwave oven, boiling water geyser, as well as plates, serving dishes and cutlery. The Centre now offers a choice of full board or self-catering bookings. Further down the corridor, there are a staff toilet and shower, disabled toilet/shower refurbished in 2003 and the girl's washroom with four toilets and showers. The interconnecting corridor then joins the old school house. This is normally used as the girls dormitory and has two staff rooms, one with two beds and the other has three (one bunk). The other three rooms can each accommodate six children in bunk beds. There is a staff toilet on the ground floor with a small wash basin, and upstairs there is a bathroom with bath and toilet. The corridor also connects the pratten building to the rest of the building, so that all areas can be reached under cover. The boy's toilet and shower room is located along this corridor. The pratten building has twenty beds all in one room, and is normally used as the boy's dormitory. Adjoining this are two staff bedrooms each with a single bed. The other half of the pratten building is the classroom. The Minibus The Centre also has a 17-seater minibus (new in 2003) with seat belts. YOU MUST BE REGISTERED TO DRIVE THE CENTRE MINIBUS. Testing and permits can be arranged through Youth Development Services at County Hall, Trowbridge. There is a small field opposite the Centre which is also available for camping (outdoor toilet facilities are available next to the Centre car park) as well as for sports and recreation. A volleyball net can be set up on request. |
